A Fascinating Look at Reunification from Labor's Perspective
Luck placed the author in Germany at the perfect time to chronicle an unprecedented historical event (German reunification), as well as the response of the German Labor Movement. Turner does an excellent job of synthesizing complex issues and events in a way that appeals to both a labor movement novice and an expert. A critical foundation for anyone who wants to understand the issues confronting the European Community, and Germany, today.

Film as social practice
Published in Unknown Binding by Routledge ()
Author: Graeme Turner
Average review score:

An overview of the impact of film on society.
This book makes a good text for beginning film students who need an understanding of film history as well as a picture of the ways media affect our lives. It presents film as interactive, not only in terms of the immediate experience, but in the ways audiences affect the daily decisions made in the business and in the ways today's educated film goers affect the uses directors and writers can make of the medium. Readers gain insight into the mysterious ways movies are born, into the major film theories, and into the way film-makers see their movies as part of a larger social context. The lay reader with a general interest in film will find the chapter on Westerns interesting because it explores a genre in depth and reveals how the movies see genre as a symbolic language. Although the word "genre" itself appears frequently in film reviews, readers generally do not seem to fully understand its importance to the movie business. The book summarizes creative, economic, and historical issues regarding film as a pervasive influence in our lives as more and more movies extend themselves into markets beyond the entity of the celluloid itself. All the peripherals such as action toys, books, music, videos, cereal, clothing, etc. are explored to help us realize the global impact movies have throughout our daily existence. If you like the movies and want to understand more about them as a world wide phenomenon, this is a good overview.

Finger Weaving: Indian Braiding
Published in Paperback by Cherokee Pubns (December, 1989)
Author: Alta R. Turner
Average review score:

Recommended for students of Native American handicrafts.
Finger weaving (also called Indian braiding) dates back centuries. All that is needed to weave these intricate, beautiful designs is a short dowel, some vividly colored yearn, and your fingers. Alta Turner draws upon her years of experience as a teacher of finger weaving to introduce the reader to the basic techniques and patterns of the North American Plains and Woodlands Indians, including the diagonal, chevron, double chevron, diamond, double diamond, lightning, double lightning and arrow-head designs. Following these, she demonstrates several striking Peruvian designs (including the Peruvian rep braids and Peruvian cross rep braids). The informative text is enhanced with diagrams and illustrated directions enabling the reader to create woven sashes, belts, collars, neck-ties, headbands, and bands for trimming or lengthening clothes. Finger Weaving: Indian Braiding is an inexpensive but invaluable 48 page booklet that will prove of high interest to students of Native American culture, costumers, and needlecrafters.

A Gem of A Book
I have used this "Treasure of A Book" for the last 20 years, when I first found a copy of it in my town's local library when I was 19 years of age. It has been especially useful while I went and after I graduated from Fashion Design School in Los Angeles. It has been an invaluable reference book, whenever I needed to find an ethic costume. For example, if I want to draw a Korean women in original costume dress. I just look under the country, alphabetically and there it is. I can easily see the traditional dress and sketch it. All the illustrations are excellent and show very good detail. The book does a very good job of representing many different ethic costumes of the world, even ones in countries that no longer exist. Many of the ethic costume designs are still used to this day in the countries that they come from. I have used it to draw illustrations showing different children from around the world. Also, I have used it for other kinds purposes including graphic design illustrations for restaurant menus and restaurant ads. I have returned to this book, over and over, as the best resource for all my needs. Even though, it was published in 1977, I still to this day find it the very best book of its kind.

Follow in Their Footsteps
This is the most incredible book for young people who would be inspired by the strength of notable African Americans. Not only that but it is a great book for children who want to learn about careers and what is involved in the career and how you can do it when the odds are against you. Besides, it is a great read.

easy to use reference book
Nancy Turner's coverage of food plants in her area is amazing. In this new edition, the photos are splendid and really aid in identifying the plants. She has found out about the plants from the people who have used them extensively. One of my favorite wild edible plant books!

A Fortunes Childrens Christmas
Published in Paperback by Silhouette (December, 1998)
Authors: Lisa Jackson, Harlequin, Barbara Boswell, and Linda Turner
Average review score:

Excellent story about a TBI survivor in the romance genre.
Hooray for Barbara Boswell! In her short story "A Home For Christmas," in the A FORTUNE'S CHILDREN CHRISTMAS anthology, she completes Joanna Chandler's story of survival after a traumatic accident begun in STAND-IN BRIDE. In a "A Home For Christmas," Joanna finds herself hired as an executive assistant to a reluctanct Ryder Fortune. Joanna's foibles such as her hyperactivity, short attention span, and short term memory deficits (all consequences of the accident that left her brain-injured) drive Ryder crazy, but her warm personality, understanding ear, and sense of humor endear her to him, so that he falls in love with her and she with him. What makes this story wonderful and very rare is that Joanna is clearly a survivor, never a victim of her disabilities. In fact, the word "disabled" is never even printed in the story. Barbara Boswell skillfully interweaves the effects of Joanna's accident into the plot line, so that Ryder's acceptance of Joanna's shortcomings is integral to the resolution of their romance.
